Guides / Totals

Over/under totals explained

A total is a bet on the combined score of both teams, not on who wins. You pick whether the final sum lands above or below the number the sportsbook posts.

Over224.5-110
Under224.5-110

If the teams combine for 225 or more points, the over wins. For 224 or fewer, the under wins. With a half point there is no push. On a whole number like 224, exactly 224 points is a push and stakes are refunded.

What moves a total

Differences from a spread

A spread depends on the margin between teams. A total depends on the sum. A game can have a close margin and still go over or under in any way, so the two bets answer different questions. Both are usually priced at -110, which means the same built-in margin applies.

Quarter and half totals

Sportsbooks also post totals for single quarters or halves, and team totals for one team's score. The logic is the same, only the scoring window changes.

Totals are not "safer" than other bets. Every price carries the sportsbook's margin. See responsible gambling for limits and help.
